Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) in Boulder, Colorado - About Us

The Guerra Fisher Institute in it's partnership with Boulder Community Health, delivers care and treatment of complicated and treatment resistant psychiatric patients.

An exhaustive evaluation of each patient, involving a 2-3 hour consultation with family present, rendering a second opinion around diagnosis, reviewing prior treatment efforts, and when needed, calling in further specialized consultation from other disciplines and ordering necessary laboratory and imaging testing.

From this thorough evaluation, a treatment plan is created with recommendations that include, but are not limited to, psychotherapies, psychopharmacology, complimentary and alternative modalities, newer neuromodulatory treatments (eg, TMS or VNS), and when indicated Electroconvulsive Therapy.

Electroconvulsive Therapy has been safely and effectively performed since 1938. Prior to that time, other convulsive therapies were performed in the service of ameliorating severe psychiatric illnesses. Safety and efficacy data for ECT were first presented the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in 1940. Since then, ECT has been an accepted treatment modality for refractory mood disorders. According to the Mayo Clinic, ECT remains the most effective therapy for severe depression. (Click here for link) The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) writes that ECT is the most researched (and has the largest history of use) of the brain stimulation therapies. (Click here for NIMH’s Q&A on electroconvulsive therapy - ECT) Now in its eighth decade in the United States, ECT is as timely and as relevant as ever.

Together, Drs. Guerra, Fisher, and Reyburn have completed over 80,000 ECT treatments and bring over 70 years of medical experience to bear in managing some of the most complex illnesses possible. This level of experience makes The Guerra Fisher Institute the most experienced ECT practice in the Mountain States region of the western United States. Our practice routinely cares for individuals from a 6-state catchment area that includes Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota, and Nebraska. As a partner with BCH, we enjoy having a full range of on-site consultative services such as Internal Medicine, Neurology, and Cardiology. Our physical integration inside of a general hospital allows multidisciplinary collaboration to take place under the same roof.

Sadly, our Institute grieved the loss of Dr. Guerra in late Fall, 2018. His experience and legacy have been etched into the on going clinical enterprise.
